Republicans Are Jumping Ship From The Trump Titanic

Itsrosegold_Admin | June 7, 2020

It took a global pandemic, no travel, and no entertainment for America to pay attention to its latent internal issues. However, although we are not in the aftermath yet, these times are making people question their allegiances to the status quo.

Mainly the Republican party during this pivotal election year.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced on Sunday that he will vote for Mr. Biden. He told CNN that Mr. Trump “lies about things” and Republicans in Congress won’t hold him accountable.

Powell voted for former President Barack Obama as well as Hillary Clinton. He also said he was close to Mr. Biden politically and socially and had worked with him for more than 35 years.

“I’ll be voting for him,” he said.

Colin Powell, who served as Secretary of State under George W. Bush and National Security Adviser under Ronald Reagan.

Trump slammed Powell in response, Tweeting that the four-star general was “was very responsible for getting us into the disastrous Middle East Wars.”

According to reports, former President George W. Bush will also not support the re-election of Donald Trump.

House Of Cards

Also, Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is not on Team Trump. Reportedly he is deliberating whether to again write in his wife, Ann, or cast another ballot this November.

Cindy McCain, the widow of Senator John McCain, has a son that is eying running run for office but she is leaning towards voting for Joe Biden.

However, none of these Republicans voted for Mr. Trump in 2016, but he is now an incumbent president. A break with the party is a signal of political weakness that can reverberate in unintended ways.

Retired military leaders have generally guarded their private political views. However, many are increasingly voicing their unease about the president’s leadership.

According to reports, Joe Biden intends to roll out his “Republicans for Biden” coalition later in his Democratic Presidential campaign.

Trump assertion of usage of military force to quell nationwide protests have alienated him from many in his own party. He has repeatedly called for protesters to be physically constrained and “dominated”.

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s blistering criticism of Mr. Trump and others are forcing a number to reckon with their party. A Republican not voting for Trump is an admission that Trump is unfit for office.

“This fall, it’s time for new leadership in this country — Republican, Democrat or independent,” said William H. McRaven, the retired Navy admiral who directed the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. “President Trump has shown he doesn’t have the qualities necessary to be a good commander in chief.”

Admiral McRaven, in an interview on the 76th anniversary of D-Day, noted that those wartime leaders inspired Americans with “their words, their actions and their humanity.”

In contrast, he said, Mr. Trump has failed his leadership test. “As we have struggled with the Covid pandemic and horrible acts of racism and injustice, this president has shown none of those qualities,” Admiral McRaven said to the New York Times. “The country needs to move forward without him at the helm.”
