Drew Brees’ initial comments on NFL players kneeling brought a ton of heat from fans, teammates and supporters of the protests. In response to the criticism, Brees issued an apology on social media and now his wife, Brittany is following up with a statement of her own.
From the Brees Dream Foundation Instagram account, Brittany Brees in plain language says, “we are the problem,” regarding the lack of understanding of what the protest was about.
“Not until this week did Drew and I realize that this is the problem. To say ‘I don’t agree with disrespecting the flag’ I now understand was also saying I don’t understand what the problem really is, I don’t understand what you’re fighting for and I’m not willing to hear you because of our preconceived notions of what that flag means to us,” Mrs. Brees said.
Brees also reveals “with tears in my eyes” that their family has been receiving death threats as a reaction to Drew’s initial opposition to the protest.
Drew himself has tried to respond to the critics and to one of his apparent supporters, Donald Trump, who said Brees should have never apologized. In a direct response to the president, the New Orleans Saints Quarterback writes on Instagram, “We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities… we must stop talking about the flag and shift our attention to the real issues of systemic racial injustice, economic oppression, police brutality, and judicial and prison reform.”
